How to grow views on YouTube Shorts

There's no secret trick to Shorts views. YouTube says it recommends what viewers choose to watch, keep watching, and don't skip. So the real question is: why don't people stay on your Short?

Below are the things you can check before you post, and the number in YouTube Studio that tells you whether a change is working.

1. The first three seconds

Most viewers decide on the first line.

  • Speak the first word within half a second. Silent openings lose people.
  • Put one concrete detail in the hook: an object, a sound, a number.
  • Make the first frame show one clear subject. In the Shorts feed, it's your thumbnail.

2. Don't let attention break in the middle

  • Something new every 5 to 8 seconds: new information, a new shot, a new turn.
  • No pause longer than about 0.7 seconds in the first 10 seconds.
  • Keep the setup under a fifth of the runtime.

3. Loop endings for rewatches

Shorts replay automatically. When the last line flows into the first, the replay feels like part of the story and many viewers watch twice.

4. Captions, audio and titles

  • Captions in the middle of the frame. The title, channel name and buttons cover the bottom and right edge.
  • Audio around -14 LUFS. Viewers move on from quiet videos.
  • Titles under 60 characters that match the hook without giving away the twist. One to three hashtags is plenty.

5. What to look at in YouTube Studio

For Shorts, YouTube Studio shows 'Viewed vs. swiped away': of the people who saw your Short in the feed, how many chose to keep watching. It's the most direct measure of your opening.

Compare against your own previous Shorts, not someone else's channel. Change one thing at a time, such as only the hook pattern, so you know which change made the difference.

6. Stay original

YouTube limits monetization for mass-produced, repetitive content. Faceless and AI-assisted channels are allowed; near-identical videos with only names swapped are the problem. Vary structure and hooks from video to video, and disclose realistic AI voices or visuals when you upload.

Common mistakes

  • Posting many near-identical videos a day. Quality per Short matters more than volume.
  • Copying other creators' viral videos. Unoriginal channels lose both reach and monetization.
  • Abandoning a format after one weak video. Test a pattern across several Shorts.
  • Titles that promise something the video doesn't deliver.

Questions

What is the best time to post YouTube Shorts?

+

There isn't one universal time. Check the 'When your viewers are on YouTube' chart in YouTube Studio, post around those times for a few weeks, and compare results.

Do hashtags increase Shorts views?

+

Hashtags help YouTube understand the topic, but views come from people staying on the video. One to three relevant hashtags is enough.

Why did my Shorts views suddenly drop?

+

Usually because fewer viewers kept watching. Compare the hooks, lengths and first frames of your recent low-view Shorts with earlier ones that did well; the difference is usually there.

How many Shorts should I post per week?

+

As many as you can make well and consistently. Three good Shorts a week beat seven rushed ones.
