Character first, story second
Write a one-page character bible so the character feels the same in every episode.
- ✦A name, an age, and one habit they're known for.
- ✦One thing they want most, and one thing they fear.
- ✦A particular way of speaking or a catchphrase.
The structure of a kids' story
- ✦Small stakes: a lost toy, a new friend, a fear.
- ✦A gentle twist that surprises without frightening.
- ✦On-screen text of five words or fewer.
- ✦A warm moment at the end.
Change the story, not just the names
The biggest risk for animated channels is repeating one template with swapped names. YouTube limits monetization for mass-produced, repetitive content. Keep the character, but make each episode's story, setting and twist genuinely new.
If a video is made for children, mark it 'Made for kids' on YouTube.

- ✕Frightening or violent scenes in videos for children.
- ✕Long on-screen text that young children can't read.
Questions
How long should a cartoon story Short be?
+
30 to 45 seconds. Children's attention moves quickly, so something new should happen on screen every 5 to 8 seconds.
Can AI-made animated stories be monetized?
+
They can, if each video shows real creative effort and the videos aren't near-copies of each other. Disclose AI voices or visuals that look realistic when you upload.
Where do cartoon channels get story ideas?
+
From children's everyday lives: the first day of school, a new sibling, a fight with a friend, fear of the dark. Small, familiar experiences make the best stories.
